ASABA—THE management of Delta State University, Abraka, has shunned an invitation by the state House of Assembly to investigate alleged withholding of a degree result of a graduated student and unjustified expulsion of two female students by the university.

The member representing Ethiope East constituency in the state House of Assembly, Mr Evance Ivwurie, had presented the two petitions from his constituents on the floor of the House leading the Speaker, Mr Monday Igbuya, to direct the House Committee on Public Petition to investigate the matter.

At the committee’s meeting which held in the Assembly complex, only the petitioners were present but neither the Vice Chancellor, Prof Victor Peretomode nor his representatives was on hand to defend the authority despite the invitation extended to it by the House.

Expressing reservations over the absence of the university authority, the committee however, fixed a new date to hear the petition, perhaps to give time for the school authority to show up.

House of Representatives

Ivwurie, who had assured that the House would  look into the two petitions in line with relevant laws, expressed concern that the university did not follow due process in taking sensitive decisions that affected the students.

He said: “It is more worrisome that the university’s  Vice Chancellor did not appear before the Public Petitions Committee of the House or send a representative despite invitations by the committee to enable the school state its own side of the matter.”

One of the petitioners, Mr Solomon Tedjere, said that the University victimised him and unjustly withheld his bachelors degree result five years after graduation based on an alleged publication inciting students without a name or signature.

The petitioner said he successfully completed his studies in the Department of Vocational Education Agricultural Science unit in 2012 but at the point of collecting his statement of result, he was informed that he had been expelled since 2011 from the University on an alleged account of the anonymous publication.
